Cloud Computing in a Regional eHealth System: An AWS-Based Architecture

M.Sc. Cloud Computing report, University of East London / Feb 2026

Summary

A secure, compliant, multi-tier AWS architecture for a regional eHealth system, with the security, compliance, disaster recovery and cost trade-offs argued out.

Abstract

This report examines the use of cloud computing (specifically AWS) in a regional eHealth system where patient records are processed in the cloud for remote access by providers and patients can locate physicians. It reviews cloud principles, service models and deployment types, and discusses virtualisation, security, privacy, regulatory compliance (HIPAA/GDPR), SLAs, disaster recovery, interoperability (FHIR), cost-benefit and scalability. These are applied to the case study, recommending an AWS architecture that leverages auto-scaling and multi-AZ redundancy, and evaluating risks (data breaches, downtime, vendor lock-in) and their mitigation (encryption, IAM policies, backup and DR plans).
